Hummel Aircraft - It's been an exciting few years at Hummel Aircraft, a long-time supplier of plans, parts and components for three well-known home-built aircraft. Despite COVID-19 and the restrictions it brought, the company's business continued to be strong in 2020 and 2021 as builders stuck at home sought freedom by starting long-term projects. The big 2020 aviation program had to be canceled, but luckily Hummel was able to hold a regular open house at the factory on October 10, 2020. Most importantly, Hummel Aviation, operated by Terry and Deb Hallett for the past 20 years, will acquired ownership of Hummel Aviation, LLC, under the auspices of Matt and Laurie Higgins, in January 2021.
Hummel Aircraft is truly a three-generation family affair. Matt's father, David Higgins, is a lifelong mechanic who began working on home-built airplanes of his own design, and Matt and Laurie's son Donavan Higgins, a graduate student at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, responsible for the company's website. . He quickly caught up in his father's advanced classes. Laurie Higgins owns a childcare company and plans to eventually offer a true "Air B&B" at the factory, where builders can stay while the workshop is open. Everyone, even high schooler Claire Higgins, participates in making and operating parties.

During 2021, they moved the Hummel kit production facility 70 miles northeast of Howell, Michigan, where they slowly began sourcing parts and components with the continued support of Ohio-based builder Terry Hallett. Location of Michigan.

Explain, the purchase requires a buyer's guide. Matt Higgins' first role, when he started working with Terry Hallett at Hummel Aviation, was to create a 3D assembly manual for the UltraCruiser he was building. As he said: “I first considered making a Hummel bird in 2001, but life got in the way. My dad and I built the Merlin GT and after selling it, I moved back to Bryan, Ohio in 2015 and started working at UltraCruiser. It seems that Terry and I worked well together, in our area, and last year he said, "You know, Deb and I are thinking about retirement. Anyway you have the essentials, why don't you buy me?" Well, I knew how the sausage was made, so the deal was done."
At this point the 3D manual for the UltraCruiser is complete and is now available with any part purchase. A similar manual for the H5 model is being developed and will soon be available as part of this kit. Sketch builders will also want to purchase a sketchbook because it greatly simplifies the construction process.
Hummel's appearance at AirVenture 2021 was a great success, and with the summer winding down, it's time for the Hummel factory flight on September 18, 2021 in Michigan. We went to check out the latest Hummel event, and we're glad we did.
Long-term flu lockdowns are being considered as Michigan public buildings remain under mask-wearing recommendations, and some areas are concerned about a sudden surge in the virus. Matt Higgins said the Livingston County Airport Authority could not accommodate more, and realized the event would be held outside most of the time, allowing the gathering to go through the security barrier at the entrance to the airport.

The Open House 2021 is not a big event, which is completely suitable for the size of Hummel Aircraft products. The ceremony took place in a spacious corner of KOZW under a beautiful Michigan autumn sky. With more than half a dozen aircraft on display, perhaps 50 attendees gathered under the stand, with plenty of time to visit with Hummel enthusiasts and compare their achievements. Laurie and Claire Higgins prepared a lunch for the crowd, and old and new management took time to update the builders and owners on past and upcoming events.
After lunch, the company's presentation and question-and-answer session revealed that Hummel Aircraft is considering relocation, while seriously evaluating Al Meyers Airport (3TE) in Tecumseh, Michigan. However, that option was dropped, and the Livingston County Airport in Howell remains the new home for Hummel Aircraft.
Other ads are in the field of component upgrades and other power plants. At this point, Higgins told us, parts makers primarily make ribs and flaps, and assemble the rest of the plane from factory parts and pre-cut skins. Building from the plans is certainly possible and supported, but these builders will likely use off-the-shelf components in many cases. About 90% of the holes are pre-drilled, so no alignment equipment is needed and the dihedral is automatically adjusted.
Another recent change is that the three-wheeled version of the UltraCruiser has a chrome-welded steel landing gear, an option for the original aluminum parts designed by Murray Hummel for the rear configuration. The weight penalty is only four ounces because the steel rod is shorter, Higgins said.

In other improvements, the tail wing kit/F-tophead will begin shipping fully assembled in mid-2021, saving significant construction time. For the H5, narrow cutouts have been standardized, the center wing skin can now be cut and finished, and fender mounting holes, rear fender openings and outer wing fender mounting holes have been added to the standard kit.
There was much debate about the UltraCruiser's other engine, which still used the semi-VW two-cylinder with 37 to 40 horsepower. These engines were originally developed by Morrie Hummel, who sold his engine modification business in 1996 to Scott Casler (www.hummelengines.com) of Coolidge, Arizona. With more interest in Hummel aircraft, VW-based engines require more time to order. Now it takes 11 months to get an engine, so delays in ordering sometimes keep the builder stuck with the plane and the engine. Terry Hallett tried to keep the finished engine on the shelves at the parts factory, but he couldn't keep up with the demand. So Hunt is on the hunt for a VW replacement.
During the flight, the Hummel aircraft demonstrated a four-cycle V-twin engine, an industrial box engine bored and polished and lightened with an aluminum flywheel, now being converted to a ground-adjustable E-Prop from France. 1.7:1 drive belt ratio. It was built by David Higgins as a prototype and sounded great when it took the lap to show. Power output is only "guessed" at this point, but it's probably around 40 horsepower. Hummel is also looking at electric propulsion over time.
The problem of supporting the original Hummel bird appeared. Although this is a fully sketched build, Hummel bird plans are still available with parts available, but often have to be ordered as needed. The experimental Hummel Bird could reach 100 mph with 32 horsepower and require a runway of about 1,800 feet. By comparison, the H5 can get up to 120 mph with a four-cylinder VW and cruise on a 1,200-foot runway. The UltraCruiser can still be built as a 103-legal ultra cruiser, albeit with a lower cruising speed, but the Hummel Bird is popular.

We were delighted to be invited to the Hummel party and enjoyed meeting old and new management as well as many builders we had met before. We hope Hummel Aircraft continues its rich history in its new home.

The Hummel Bird is an experimental/patient aircraft designed by Morry Hummel and manufactured by Hummel Aircraft in Byron, Ohio, USA. It is a single-seat, monoplane, all-metal airplane powered by a 32 hp 1/2 VW genset and a 45 hp engine, although other engines have been used with success. It was built from scratch, but many of the parts were pre-made from Hummel Aircraft. Examples cost less than $ 4,000, built with extreme "start" but with all new materials and pre-engineered jeans, maybe $ 8,000-$ 10,000.
