Hot Air Balloon Crashes In Desert Near Las Vegas Valley

Four people were killed when two single-engine planes collided at a North Las Vegas airport on Sunday, officials said.

A Piper PA-46 and a Cessna 172, with two people on board, collided at North Las Vegas Airport around noon, according to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration.

"Initial information indicates that the Piper PA-46 was preparing to land when it collided with the Cessna 172," the statement said. "The Piper crashed in a field east of runway 30-right and the Cessna crashed in a pool of water."

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are expected to investigate the accident. They had not provided any further information on Sunday evening.

A Piper PA-46 can carry a pilot and 5 passengers while a Cessna 172 can carry 4 people. The Cessna 172 has been built more than any other aircraft model. The first version was introduced in 1955.

Dor Rudin, 58, told reporters he has been flying for more than four decades and owns a single-engine plane that hangs at the airport, where he recently flew for a night pilot class.

Rudin, who files his case once a week, said he was "very surprised" that a mid-air collision occurred at the North Las Vegas airport, given the open field with few obstacles and sunny, clear skies.

He said he has never heard of two planes colliding at any of the airports he flies into.

"It's wide open," he said. There are not many buildings or structures in this area and there is an active control tower when it occurs. "I'm really surprised that there wasn't better ground awareness either by one of the pilots or the watch tower."

He said he was driving when he saw a plane approaching in a way that "looked a bit strange". Soon after, he saw smoke.

According to Las Vegas Review-Journal archives, two pilots were injured in September 2003 when their planes collided on the north runway of the Las Vegas airport. One took off and the other landed, the newspaper reported.

On Christmas Day that year, six members of the family died after their plane crashed into a drainage ditch shortly after takeoff.
